A Greener Office: Environmental Benefits Of Adopting LED Lighting Systems

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard at least some stories about how global warming is affecting our planet, and it’s not good news.

At a time when humans have finally realised the impact of their actions, we are now all responsible for picking up the pieces.

You might think that something as simple as changing the way you illuminate your space wouldn’t make much difference. But it really can, especially if we all adopt a new approach.

How LED Lighting Has A Positive Environmental Impact

How we choose to light our homes and businesses can have a serious effect on the environment. While one seemingly innocent lightbulb may not look as though it could do much, you have to consider how many are in use around the world; it all adds up.

But by making the switch to LED lighting, you could be doing your part to work towards a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.

Fewer Carbon Emissions

Carbon is one of the primary causes of climate change and it’s emitted from various sources including industry and commercial activity.

Traditional forms of lighting can use as much as 80% more energy than their LED counterparts and that’s a lot more greenhouse gases being released into the environment.

Incandescent light bulbs may produce as much as 4500 lbs of carbon every year. By comparison, LED lighting might only produce around 451 lbs so it’s easy to see that there’s a clear difference.

It has been reported that if every house in the United States were to replace just one light bulb, we could reduce carbon emissions by a whopping 9 billion lbs!

No Toxic Chemicals

In traditional fluorescent lighting, tons of nasty chemicals are used including mercury. While you might not think that’s harmful initially, consider what happens when you dispose of old bulbs and lighting systems.

They end up in landfill; along with those aforementioned chemicals.

Chemicals like mercury and lead are then spread out into the environment with the potential of contaminated otherwise healthy soil, plant life, and even the very air we breathe.

Easily Recyclable

Other types of light bulbs are made from glass which is not as easy to recycle, especially when you consider that the bulbs are packed with chemicals.

On the flip side, LED bulbs are made using plastic and contain no chemicals so they’re much less likely to end up in landfill.

If you’re part of a recycling program (most businesses and local authorities run one) then you can dispose of your used bulbs with the rest of your recyclable goods.

By recycling, there is less need for the manufacture of new goods and therefore fewer emissions from these processes.

Longer Lifespan, Less Waste

A single LED light bulb can last for tens of thousands of hours. On average, one bulb could serve you for two decades; just imagine how many fluorescent bulbs you’d use in that time.

Not only is this a great way to save money but this longer lifespan means less waste. And, as I have discussed when your bulbs do run out, they can be recycled.

Again, this also means that fewer bulbs need to be manufactured and this all goes a long way in reducing carbon emissions.

It’s Good For Your Business Too!

It’s easy to see the positive environmental impacts of using LED lighting but if you’re a business owner, then there’s even more good news..

Lower Energy Bills

You don’t need me to remind you about the ridiculously high cost of energy we have seen in recent times. Things have gotten so bad that many UK businesses have had to fold because they can’t meet the financial demands of their energy suppliers.

However, since LED lighting is much more energy efficient and uses around 80% less energy than traditional lighting options, you’ll see a significant reduction in your bills.

By combining the use of LED lighting with other changes like better insulation, buying energy efficient office equipment and taking an energy audit, you’ll start to notice even better savings.

Improved Reputation

We live in an age where sustainability is everything. Consumers are now looking to work with businesses that can prove their dedication to the environment so it’s essential that you adopt strategies for this.

The simple choice to switch to energy-efficient LED lighting is just one of the ways you can make your business more sustainable and therefore boost its reputation.

It’s been reported that as many as 66% of consumers (and 77% of millennials) take sustainability into account when deciding whether to purchase a product or service from a particular business.

If you want your business to be ethical and keep up with the demands of the modern consumer, it’s time to make that change!
